Ventura County Science Fair and STEM Expo is Friday, March 22
Media Invited to See Innovative Student Exhibits
The Ventura County Office of Education is proud to present the 65th Ventura County Science Fair on Friday, March 22 at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks. Approximately 600 Ventura County students will be presenting more than 500 projects. The students are among thousands in grades 6-12 who competed for the chance to present at the fair. This year’s Science Fair includes a STEM Expo, hosted by Cal Lutheran, that will feature fascinating scientific exhibits and expose students to career opportunities in STEM-related fields.
There are three media opportunities associated with the Science Fair, all with great chances to get photos, videos and interviews:
Set Up Day
When: Thursday, March 21 - 12:00 pm to 7:00 pm
Where: California Lutheran University - Gilbert Arena • 60 W. Olsen Rd., Thousand Oaks
What: Media invited to drop by the exhibit halls as students are busy setting up their projects.
Judging Day & STEM Expo
When: Friday, March 22 - 8:00 am to 8:00 pm (see detailed schedule below)
Where: California Lutheran University - Gilbert Arena • 60 W. Olsen Rd., Thousand Oaks
What: Students showcase their projects and are interviewed by the judges; judges select winning entries.
Note: The exhibit halls will be open to the public between 3:30 pm and 6:30 pm.
Awards Night
When: Monday, March 25 - 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm
Where: VCOE Conference and Educational Services Center - 5100 Adolfo Road, Camarillo
What: Find out which student projects are the winners in a variety of categories.
Schedule for Judging Day and STEM Expo, Friday, March 22 at Gilbert Arena
- 8:00 AM – 9:00 AM: Judges’ Breakfast and Orientation
- 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM: Judges review projects (no students, parents or advisors)
- 9:30 AM – 10:00 AM: Students arrive and go to their projects for oral interview
- 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM: Student Oral Presentations (students and judges only, no parents or advisors)
- Noon – 1:00 PM: Lunch
- Noon – 3:00 PM: Cal Lutheran STEM Expo at Kingsmen Park
- 3:30 PM – 6:30 PM: Project Viewing (open to the public)
- 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM: Project Removal
About the Ventura County Science Fair
With categories from animal sciences to physics, the Ventura County Science Fair is designed to promote and reward the achievements of our students in various scientific fields. By developing skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, students are laying the groundwork for their future success. The theme of this year’s science fair is “Engineering Tomorrow.”
The Science Fair brings together students, teachers and scientists from around Ventura County to give students an awareness of the importance of science in their lives and to cultivate their interest in science careers. The Science Fair enhances students’ scientific knowledge and research skills, reinforces science content standards for California public schools and recognizes outstanding student achievement. It also motivates students to undertake and complete scientific inquiries in their special areas of interest.
Approximately 100 science, engineering and industry professionals from throughout Ventura County volunteer their time to serve as judges for the Science Fair.
About 40 Ventura County Science Fair participants will advance to the California State Science Fair on April 29-30 at the California Science Center in Los Angeles. Many Ventura County students have placed in the top three for their categories and some have been awarded Project of the Year at the statewide competition.
This year’s Ventura County Science Fair logo was created by Sophia Peate, a student at La Reina High School in Thousand Oaks.
